B.R.A.T. Diet – use plantain as a supplement?
Remember the acronym B.R.A.T diet for little ones with diarrhea? Banana, rice, applesauce, and toast. I used this to help little upset tummies. Of course I was always missing a few things on the brat list. If you stock Plantain flour in your cabinet that's all you need.
Diarrhea – 1 teaspoon (kids) or 2-3 teaspoons (adult). Plantain flour can be sprinkled on yogurt or mixed into water (banana water). Useful for bulking up stool and regulating the digestive system.
Plantains may help prevent infectious diseases associated with diarrhea, according to English researchers who published a 2012 article in "Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry." The soluble fiber in plantains may inhibit pathogens that cause diarrhea and spread it to others. In 2009, Venezuelan researchers reported that green plantains had effectively reduced the incidence of diarrhea in children. They published their study in "Journal of the American College of Nutrition," reporting that hospitalized children who ate plantains experienced more weight gain and a faster recovery than children who ate yogurt.
